An afternoon of fun turned to tragedy in Butler County, Pa., when a helmet-less 12-year-old boy riding alone lost control of his ATV while riding in a cornfield, according toWPXI in Pittsburgh, which reports:

“He wasn’t able to complete the turn. He drifted toward the wood line and the vehicle hit a stump, causing it to overturn,” Pennsylvania State Trooper Dan Kesten told the new station.

Initially, the boy’s parents did not know what had happened to their son Sunday afternoon:

“The boy’s father went out looking for him and ended up finding him,” Kesten added.

The boy, who wasn’t wearing a helmet or safety gear, was discovered by his dad with the heavy ATV rolled on top of him, WPXI reports.

The boy, who was not initially identified in police reports, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
