TURNER (WGME) – A community is in mourning after an accident killed a man on his family farm.

The victim is described as a former standout student and athlete.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office says recent high school graduate Roy Varney was working Monday morning at the Nezinscot Farm, a well-known farm owned by his parents in Turner.

The Nezinscot Farm Store announced his death on Facebook Monday afternoon. There are hundreds of comments sending love and prayers to the family.

The sheriff’s office say Varney was operating a machine while cleaning manure out of a cow barn. They say while turning the machine around, it accidentally fell backwards into the manure pit.

Varney was taken to Central Maine Medical Center. He died sometime Monday. An OSHA spokesperson says they’re gathering information for next steps.

The community says Varney was a great student at Leavitt High School and an accomplished skier. He was named All-Region Boys Nordic Skier of the Year by the Sun Journal. In an April article, Varney’s ski coach states how Varney will be one the most successful Nordic skiers the team has had.

Leavitt High School’s football and basketball coach sent a statement.
