Farm accident claims life of 8-year-old boy, deputies say

An 8-year-old Louisiana boy died Saturday in a farming accident in Kansas, sheriff’s deputies in McPherson County, Kansas, said.

Deputies said the boy was fatally injured in an accident near Galva. He was riding on a tractor with an adult when a piece of farming equipment came off the tractor and struck him.

The boy is from Derrider, Louisiana, Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dean Scott told KWCH. He was in town visiting his grandparents for Thanksgiving.

A family friend, who was not identified, told the news station that a spring came loose from the tractor as it went over a bump. However, KSNW reported that the boy was hit by a “heavy, metallic disc” that flew off a piece of equipment and hit the cab of the tractor.

Authorities responded to the accident around 1 p.m. Saturday, according to KSNW. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured and authorities have not released the child’s identity.
