Chicago police say a 7-year-old girl has died after being struck by a tractor while crossing the street with her mother.

Chicago police spokeswoman Nicole Trainor says the accident happened at about 7:50 a.m. in the West Englewood neighborhood on the city’s South Side. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the girl as Samyra Lee.

Police say she was struck by the tractor’s trailer as the tractor was southbound. The girl was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital.

The mother suffered hip injuries, but she turned down treatment and rushed to the hospital to be with her daughter.

Chicago mayor’s office spokeswoman Shannon Breymaier says the vehicle was driven by an employee of a city Streets and Sanitation Department contractor. The driver of the tractor was issued a citation.
